Checking In

We are just about a month into the Major League Baseball season and I have to be honest, I haven't watched a single game. After the World Baseball Classic finished up, I kind of shifted my focus to softball for the better part of spring. It's safe to say that is what I will be watching the most of in the coming months, but I do want to keep an eye on what is happening with baseball.
I went to watch my nephew play basketball the other day and as I was sitting next to my brother in law he asked me if I was interested in going to a Tigers game. My schedule over the next couple of months is kind of busy, so I asked when and he said just sometime this summer. One thing I have learned, is if you are available and this brother in law asks you to go to a ball game, you probably should. He has some pretty fancy clients who often gift him tickets to games or he gets them through his accounting firm.
I remember one year we were sitting right behind the home dugout, it was pretty amazing!
While the Pistons seem to be having a stellar year this year, the Tigers are off to a bit of a struggle. Going into their game today against Kansas City they are 9 - 9 on the season. As many people will tell you though, the MLB season is a long one, so you shouldn't be too concerned where your team is sitting after just a month of play.
Even the worst teams in the MLB have managed to win at least six games so far. Of course, who else but the Dodgers would be in first place with an impressive 14 wins already this season. It's also no surprise they are the favorite to win the World Series once again this year. Can you say "Three-Peat"?
While the Dodgers are at the top of the National League as well as MLB as a whole, The Giants and the Rockies are sitting at the bottom of the National League with those six wins I mentioned earlier. I really feel bad for Colorado because they are a cool team and their facility is really amazing. The fans in Denver deserve better.
There is a huge gap in the NL West with those two teams being at the bottom and then we jump up to Arizona with 11 wins, San Diego with 12 and of course the Dodgers with 14. Meanwhile, Cincy leads the NL Central with 11 wins, but the Pirates are closing in with 11 wins themselves. St. Louis has 10 wins and then the Brewers and Cubs both have 9 wins. Finally, in the NL East, Atlanta leads the charge ith 12 wins, then the Marlins with 9, Philly and the Nationals both have 8, and the Mets have 7 wins.
To be fair, the NL seems a little stacked when you jump over and look at the AL stats right now. Minnesota leads the AL Central and the AL all together with 11 wins, Cleveland has 10, Detroit has 9, Kansas City has 7, and sadly for @hanshotfirst, the Chicago Whitesox fall in the bottom of the whole MLB with 6 wins.
In the AL East, Tampa Bay leads the charge with 10 wins, but the Yankees are right behind them also with 10 wins. Balitmore has 9 wins, and then the Jay's and Red Sox are tied with 7 wins. That's gotta be a bit scary for a Toronto team that was in the World Series last year.
Finally, in the AL West, The Athletics are at the top with 10 wins, Texas and the Angels both have 9, and then Houston and Seattle fill out the bottom with 8 wins a piece.
Perhaps it is just that the AL is more evenly matched than the NL?
Hopefully it doesn't take me another month to check in on the Detroit Tigers!
