Big Wins

I almost feel a bit overwhelmed there are so many different sports happening right now. Between the NCAA men's and women's tournaments, the world baseball classic, and softball, my YouTube TV account has been working overtime. Let's get the most exciting stuff (at least for me) out of the way first. The Radford Highlanders softball team had a home game last night against Campbell University. As I mentioned yesterday, this was the Campbell team that had beaten them pretty harshly a few weeks ago.
You might remember I mentioned yesterday that our niece hasn't gotten a lot of playing time as a freshman. That changed a little bit last night as she got to play two or three innings and she also had the chance to hit. She had awesome contact with a ball that unfortunately ended up being a fly out to left center field. It was really great to see her on the field and I have a feeling the more she proves herself the more chances she will get for stuff like that.
As for the overall game, Radford went down early 1 to 0 against Campbell, but they were able to tie the game up and then move ahead 3 to 1 after a home run and RBI by one of their catchers. Campbell got one back, but the final score of the game was 3 to 2 Radford. Like I said, in their past meeting Campbell beat them 13 to 5, so this was a much better outing for the Highlanders. They have their home invitational this weekend, and I will definitely be watching those games and hoping to get some more glimpses of number 0 on the field!
Conference tournaments are finishing up for basketball and we are just waiting to see what is going to happen come Selection Sunday when the brackets are revealed for both the men's and women's tournaments. There will be some good games over the next few days as the men's teams fight to secure their spot in the national tournament. I would keep an eye on those if I were you.
Finally, in the World Baseball Classic, the quarterfinals are set.
Starting on Friday we will see the first two games of the quarterfinals with the next two games happening on Saturday. We starting things off at 6:30 PM EST with Korea taking on the Dominican Republic, then at 8:00 PM the USA will face Canada. The US barely squeezed into the quarterfinals and it was all thanks to a commanding win 9 to 1 by Italy last night over Mexico. You see, Mexico and the US both had one loss. If Mexico had won the game by more than four runs they would have move along to the quarterfinals instead of the US.
Saturday we see Puerto Rico face the team from Italy at 3:00 PM EST, and then Venezuela takes on Japan at 9:00 PM EST. I think the Japanese team and the Italian teams are the only two that are undefeated in the series. It's funny, because you don't really think of Italy being a big baseball nation, but when you consider the number of Italian American professional players who are likely playing for their home country, it starts to make a lot more sense.
It would seem right now Japan and Italy are the teams to beat, but I wouldn't sleep on the US. The fact is, right now Italy and Japan are on the same side of the bracket, so they are going to have to probably face each other in the semifinals if they make it past the quarterfinals. Which means only one of them can make it to the finals. Which honestly seems a little crappy given their performance in the other games, but I guess that is just the way it goes.
