Back to the grind

It's hard to comprehend, but we are reaching that time of year when young folks all across the country are starting to trickle back onto university and college campuses across the US. While some students still have a few weeks of summer bliss left, others who are participating in fall sports have found themselves thrust into adulthood.

Our niece who just recently graduated moved into her dorm at the beginning of this week. She is going to be playing volleyball for a small community college in the middle of the state while she also focuses on her academics. I just hopped over to their website to see if I could get an idea of what their schedule is going to look like through the season.

I was happy to find that one of their games is at a college a little closer to where we live, so we will likely be attending that game as long as they don't end up cancelling it or something. From there we will maybe try to fill in a few home games so we can see her play on home turf.

We actually aren't sure how much play time she is actually going to get being a freshman and all. It's possible they throw her right into the fire, but it is also possible that they try to ease her into things slowly. It will all depend on what position she is going to play and whether or not they already have someone in that slot. She is a fantastic libero if you are familiar with the game. She can cover so much area in the back of the play field and she is an defensive beast.

Our oldest niece is not going away to college this semester. Instead, she is starting her student teaching, and all of the classes she has are going to be virtual. Instead of all that travel time, she will be focusing on being a mom and coaching a softball team. It's actually kind of crazy how many offers she has gotten over the past year to coach this team or that team. I'm so proud of her.

Finally, our other niece is going to be heading back to Radford University in just a couple of weeks. Although they play some fall softball games, she doesn't have to be back quite as early as teams who start their regular season play this month. The big news for her is that Radford has finally hired a new coach after Coach Fagan left earlier this summer. Joe Pound is the new head coach of the Highlanders softball team and our niece is pretty excited about what this means for the team.

It's going to be a tough road for coach Pound, a large number of the players entered the transfer portal and left the program after Fagan moved to Liberty University. Pound has an impressive resume though, and hopefully he has an energy and style that our niece is compatible with. I also hope he sees her potential early and gets her on the field more this season than she was last season.
