It's been a while since I have written a post about softball. Since I have been on vacation, and then I got wrapped up in the World Cup hype, my softball posts kind of fell to the wayside. I intend to take care of that today as I get you all caught up with what has been going on in the world of my oldest niece. Tomorrow I will cover her younger sister that you see in the opening photo above.
As you might remember, my oldest niece doesn't play softball anymore. Instead, she has turned in her batting gloves for a coaches hat or visor. Along with her dad and few other adults, they have been coaching a 16U team that she used to play for called the Dublin Revolution Elite 16U team. The funny thing is, there isn't a regular Dublin Revolution team anymore, so the "Elite" is just a bit of fluff.
That being said, the young ladies on the team decided it was more than just a name and they have been playing amazing the past two weekends. I'm so proud of the job my niece is doing as a coach and the example she is setting for her daughter.
Let me give you a bit of background before I cover the past two weekends of action. Until that point, the team had been doing okay, but not great. They played in some tournaments, and as you might imagine, there was some drama concerning play time for some of the young ladies. Their parents were butt hurt that their little angel wasn't getting as much time on the field as they thought they should. Well, it turns out their kid just wasn't that good, and at this level you are playing to win, not playing to make everyone feel good.
My niece even said, "it's pretty sad I have to explain to a grown ass man that we are here to win".
Anyway, that player and her friend ended up quitting the team, and wouldn't you know it, the very next weekend the Revolution Elite team had a banger weekend finishing pretty high in the tournament and getting a trophy.
They started on Saturday the 11th beating a Windsor Wildcats team 7 to 6, then they beat SBT 4 to 0. They proceeded to tie their next pool play game 2 to 2 against Lady Irish to set them up for bracket play on the 12th.
In their morning game they run ruled the Windsor Wildcats 14 to 1, then they took down Michigan Rage 6 to 5 before finally falling to NWO Heat 1 to 3.
This past weekend was their final weekend of play, and they put up a nice showing making it to the second game of bracket play before getting eliminated. Pool play started with a 10 to 6 win over Charge Fastpitch, then a 4 to 0 win over USA Impact before rounding out the day with a 10 to 2 run rule victory over Cap City Force.
Sunday morning started well with a 4 to 2 win over Ohio Sting before they took a tough loss against Ohio MOJO Blueblood 4 to 5.
The good news is, my niece and her dad have already been tapped to coach a local high school team. I am not sure if they are going to take the job, but I think there are bright things in store for her!
