Wedding Photography: Chaos, Coffee, and Capturing Love - This is my entry for the #monomad challenge

The Gear That Got Us Through

Back in our full-time wedding photography days, we lived by two rules: never run out of coffee, and always trust the gear. Our Canon 5D’s and 1D’s were workhorses, paired with the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L for cinematic moments and the EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro for those detail shots that scream, “Pinterest me!” Shooting in RAW was a must—weddings are unpredictable, and RAW gave us the flexibility to fix lighting, colors, and, occasionally, an overly enthusiastic Uncle Bob.

Why Black-and-White?

Most galleries were colorful bursts of love and chaos, but sometimes, we slipped in black-and-white shots. Why? Because they strip away distractions, leaving only raw emotion and timeless vibes. The ring exchange in monochrome? Pure magic—just hands, connection, and the nervous energy of “Don’t drop it!” Black-and-white doesn’t just show; it feels, and we already knew back then, that these would be perfect for this week's #monomad Challenge!

Storytelling Under Pressure

Wedding photography is like playing emotional Tetris—you’re always fitting pieces together. The 70-200mm helped us capture those intimate moments from afar (nobody wants a photographer in their vows), while the Macro lens turned tiny details into works of art. Weddings are about big love and small moments, and we made sure both got their spotlight.

The Chaos We Loved

It wasn’t all dreamy shots and soft light. Weddings are a mix of pure joy and absolute mayhem. We’ve dodged rogue flower girls, wrestled with faulty memory cards, and survived groomsmen’s attempts at “creative” photo ideas. But honestly? That chaos was part of the fun, and we loved it!

Why It Was Worth It

Looking back, the stress and unpredictability were nothing compared to the joy of delivering images that made couples laugh, cry, and relive their day (for real! It's pure dopamine kick!). It wasn’t just about taking pictures; it was about preserving moments. And yes, RAW files and good lenses help, but it’s passion that makes it all worth it.

Weddings are messy, but they’re also magic. One click, one moment, one story at a time.

Yeah, at one time, our accountant said we should make some expenses in our business, so we bought some advertisement space in a magazine :-) The thing was, it was the worst money ever spent, because when the ad ran, we were already fully booked for the next 2 years :-) But on the other hand, at least we didn't have to hand over the money to the taxman :-D

One of our politicians did that with a whole lot of bribe cash he received, over a decade ago. Big scandal! He thought, if the money's gone, they can't prove anything! Unfortunately for him, he was caught red handed, literally, with the money in his hands, throwing it into the fire in his garden.
The guy never got any punishment, and is now again in the government...
So yeah, burning our money in the stove instead of paying taxes IS a better investment, it still gets burned, and at least YOU have some of the heat :-)

I can totally imagine!!! And what a pleasure that must be, to not be constantly confronted with human stupidity!
A study showed by the way that average IQ in Belgium is only 92. Which is quite sobering to say the least.
On the other hand, it does explain a lot about a lot of things we had felt and noticed here before! Such as the lonely feeling and all that :-D

Yes, I've heard of studies like that for different areas, social classes, racial groupings, lifestyle, among others. The dumbing down of humanity was rather successful I'd say.

Oh yes, it certainly does. It is a very strange feeling indeed to only very rarely come across others like me, or us. There's a reason many of the most intelligent people choose to live alone.

The IQ test also only measures a very narrow range of logical, analytical, and rational characteristics, so it's actual usefulness is rather limited. There are many kinds of intelligences, or lines of development, and in most people they are very asymmetrical. The most intelligent people are well-rounded in all of them. 😁🙏💚✨🤙

Indeed, and what is measured by the typical IQ tests is not really a good prediction of overal intelligence, unless like you mentioned, in the outer ends of the bell curve. Most of the intelligent people seem to have an overall higher intelligence. And I have the impression that it works the same on the other end, most people with lower IQ, tend to be scoring rather low on other forms of intelligence (such as EQ) as well...

Yes, and that multi-intelligence quotient is a far better measure of overall intelligence that the much narrower IQ tests. Yes, I'd say that that's true, the people with the highest actual intelligence are proficient across the various intelligences, with inverse being true those of a lower overall intelligence. 😁🙏💚✨🤙
