Alright, BeerSaturday peeps, gather 'round the digital campfire because this one’s got everything: medieval castles, alcohol-free beer, family vibes, and… dessert. Yeah, I went full “hipster dad on a cheat day” and I’m not even sorry about it.

🎯 Context First, Beer Second (Kinda)

Last weekend we did what all perfectly sane humans do when they need a mental reset (and some stuff that's cheaper there than at home), we drove back to Luxembourg.

Where knights once defended their land. I defended my right to eat pie with beer.
Because beer tastes better near medieval rivers. It's probably some kind of science.

Why? Because a few weeks ago, we stumbled across this absolutely picturesque village called Esch-sur-Sûre, tucked between fairy-tale hills and a river that looks like it came straight out of a Bob Ross fever dream. I even wrote a full-on aerial love letter to the place over here if you’re into poetic drones and nostalgic ramblings.

So of course we returned.

This time, though, I came prepared—not just with the camera, but with a purpose.

Because what’s the point of being surrounded by natural beauty if you’re not also sipping something cold and foamy while staring pensively into the distance like a European cologne ad?

Drink responsibly. Or at least look cool doing it.

🍺 The Beer: Diekirch 0.0% – A Surprisingly Decent Sobriety

Since I was driving (being a responsible adult is overrated but necessary, and this is one of those rare times I DO get labeled as a "responsible adult"!), I grabbed a Diekirch 0.0%, Luxembourg’s local pride in the non-alcoholic department.

That’s not a pint, it’s a lifestyle choice.

Let’s break it down:

  • Diekirch Brewery is practically the name in Luxembourg beer. They’ve been brewing since 1871 (aka Back in my day… if “my day” was the Franco-Prussian War, which IS how it feels sometimes on a Sunday morning if the the Saturday evening went on beyond 22:00...).

  • This 0.0% Blonde is brewed with the same yeast and malts as their regular beer but halted mid-fermentation to keep it virgin-friendly.

  • Think crisp, malty, lightly floral, with a body that says “I’m trying my best even without the booze.”

And yeah, I liked it.

Not in a “I want a six-pack of this for Netflix nights” kinda way. But in a “holy crap, non-alcoholic beer doesn’t suck anymore” way. The technology has leveled up, people. Gone are the days where NA beer tasted like someone soaked cardboard in sparkling water and hoped for the best. Yuck. I still remember those attempts.

🍰 The Pairing: Apple Pie, Ice Cream, and Zero Shame

So here’s where the story takes a left turn into pure YOLO territory.

After a nice hike around the castle (proof in the final photo, yes, that actual tower exists and no, it doesn’t lead to a princess, my princesses were already stationed in the pub), we sat down, I ordered my NA beer, and then casually paired it with warm apple pie, chocolate ice cream, and whipped cream.

Did it make sense? No. Did I care? Also no.

Was it delicious? You bet your IPA-loving soul it was.

0.0% alcohol. 100% delicious regret.

I know some of you might say beer and dessert is a no-go. But we’re living in 2025! We’ve got non-alcoholic IPAs, AI making playlists, and billionaires naming their kids after algebra. Let me have my Diekirch + dessert moment.

There's nothing quite like sitting in the mountains with everything you need to hand.

Last time I tried a non alcoholic beer was in the 70's 😂👍

lol! The only thing I had in the 70's was mother's milk and cocoa :-D
But in the 90's, non alcoholic beer was pretty gruesome I can confirm :-D

LOL - did I already mention that I love how you describe things like here: "the days where NA beer tasted like someone soaked cardboard in sparkling water and hoped for the best" 🤣
And what we also seem to have in common: Since I have been part of the #BEER community I feel like whenever having a beer I first think about a good picture and the story for the challenge and second about enjoying it. Crazy, isn't it?
