My New Apartment.

Remembering that I have finally gotten an apartment after a long wait brings me so much joy. I’ve made my plans about how and what I want my apartment to look like, the interior and even exterior.
The very moment when my landlord handed my apartment key to me, I implemented the plans right away just as a homeless person would do.

All I wanted was peace but my new apartment came with a pest in my life. Renting the apartment, my landlord promised me that the jam key will be fixed, the outer part of the gate will be fixed so that tenants will be able to lock the gate either from inside or outside of the house.

Just because I’m at the forefront of the whole house, it feels like I’ve been employed as the sentinent of the whole house. When I hear someone bang on that gate, I go outside to open the gate and this keeps reoccurring until my neighbors decided to show me their true colors.

I was having a peaceful sleep when I heard some bangs on the gate. Who could that be? I woke up in a panic. My heart started to flutter. I took my phone to check what the time says. It was 3:29 am in the midnight and I don’t think I’m expecting anyone by that time of tge night.

“Who must have been hitting the gate at that time of the night?,” I said to myself. Driven by fear, I picked up my phone and called my other neighbor.

“Hello, did you hear some people trying to break the gate,” even before I was done talking, I could hear him gasping and I could tell that he got scared too. For a moment, I felt unsafe. If it was possible to disappear from the house, I would have done that.

“Yes I heard too but let’s go out in full force and see who they may be,” that sounded awkward to me at first. How do we just go out to open the gate for people who we do not know? I was still racking my brain to know what’s next for me when my neighbor talked to me through the window so that we can go outside together.

As soon as we opened the gate, all I expected to ask was why those people were banging on our gate at that time but I was shocked. I was shocked to see my other neighbors by the gate. They were the ones hitting the gate in such manner and at that time. I never imagined that they could be night crawlers.

To make peace, I welcomed them properly and went inside my apartment. I’m sure they caught a glimpse of my demeanor and they apologized. I’m quick to forgive people as long as they’ve apologized and I did that right away, hoping for such act to cease in that home but, it happened again.

Just after two days when I have fully recovered from the heart fluttering which happened due to the banging of the gate, they did another one again.
“Won’t you come and open the door? We’ve been hear since ten minutes,” I didn’t even know when they started hitting on the gate but that loud voice woke me up. I’m fast to recognize people’s voice and I could tell that it’s my neighbor’s voice.

As a peacemaker, I still went ahead to open the gate even though I was boiling with anger. After this kept reoccurring, I finally concluded that my neighbor is the thorn in my side.
I called my landlord who has promised to fix the jam key when I rented the house at first. I also informed him about everything going on in the house.

“I’m sorry to hear that. I’ll call my worker to come check it now and we’ll fix it today,” he said to me. My mind was at peace that I can begin to have a good sleep but my landlord is the real definition of Lagos landlords who promise and fail tenants.

Eventually, I fixed the jam key by myself after talking into my neighbors so that we can fix the key together. I waited two days at first to see if persuading them will work out but I still didn’t get a response from them and for my sanity, I fixed it with my money and my neighbor stopped being a thorn in my side.
Then, I started having the peace which I deserve.
