Looking For The Fruits.
I never liked to sit in the living room every night. I was just a young girl who’s quite inquisitive and my mum complains about it a lot. It got tiring that I felt my mum never sees any good in me and every night when my dad comes back from work, she reports me to him.
“I don’t know what else to do on this girl’s matter. She keeps doing one wrong thing everyday,” once my mum starts her sentence this way, it means she wants to give a complaint about me to my dad.
I could have stayed in the room and pretend to be reading but there was no need for that because they will still call me to the living room to scold me. So, it was just better to be there and face my fears.
Just a night before that day, my mum had complained seriously about my curiousness. I always want to know everything and she never liked it. I also never understood the harms that over curiosity could cause.
“The greatest punishment she can give to me is say words that will make me cry,” I thought so I kept being a busybody in the whole of the house.
Fridays are just like enjoyment days for us because mum will go to the market and we can do what we like. I was taking a nap on the couch when my mum got back from the market.
“Mummy is back,” I heard my sister scream from the table where she was sitting and playing games with her friends. I immediately woke up from my deep sleep and we all offloaded the goods but something felt weird.
Everytime when my mum gets back from the market, we offload the goods and my mum brings out a black nylon from the car which usually contains Apple, Mango or some other fruits but this time, there was no black nylon of such.
The only black nylon among the goods was so big and didn’t look like it will contain Apples or any of the fruits that my mum usually buys.
“Maybe the fruits will be in this big nylon. Let me check what’s inside it,” my mum will surely go home to park her car so that’s going to be the right time for me to strike. I waited some minutes for her to leave the shop so she will park the car at home.
Promptly after she left the shop, my sister was back to the table where she was sitted with her friends and I secretly went to the second shop to check if the fruits were in the nylon.
I raised up the tied nylon and pressed every part of it to know what’s inside it and suddenly, I heard a smash of broken bottles on the floor.
My sister and her friends ran inside to see what fell on the floor. The nylon which I thought contained fruit actually contained Olive oils which my mum sells at the shop.
“Ah! Mummy will finish you today. I thought she told you to stop poke nosing up and down?” She yelled. Normally, as a stubborn kid, I talk back at my sister but knowing now that I messed up, I kept shut and couldn’t even look straight into her eyes.
I came outside to carry a plastic so I can sort and separate the ones that got broken from the ones that didn’t. I didn’t know what made me look to my right and I sighted my mum coming from afar. My heart skipped a beat. I was scared and thought that may actually be the end of my life.
As my mum moved closer, I saw her holding the nylon of fruits which I was looking for. She noticed something had happened and she came straight to second shop to see that over a dozen of olive oil has been wasted.
“I won’t pay your school fee for this term. Your dad has given me the money but I’ll use it to clear this mess you created. I’ve warned you severally about how curiousity killed the cat but I’ve just realized how adamant you are,” I thought they were just words of the mouth but she meant it.
Then, she shared the fruits among the other kids but didn’t give any to me.
Throughout that term, my name was amongst the list of debtors in the whole school which has never happened before and I was not allowed to sit for that term’s examination because of the fee I was owing.
No one gave me any other any warning to stop being a busybody because I learned the hard way.

Wow, that was intense. Curiosity really got you in trouble that day. I felt the tension when your mom was walking back with the fruit - my heart skipped too. Definitely a tough lesson, but a memorable one.
Your curiosity got the better part of you and landed you in trouble. Thank you for sharing.
