Creative Sunday - Making Efo Riro.

Efo Riro is one of the most common foods here in Nigeria and it is typically made by the Yoruba tribe. Ero Riro is the native food of Yoruba tribe and it’s a very easy to make and delicious soup which can be eaten with foods like Rice, Semo, Amala and so much more.

To make Efo Riro, here are a few ingredients to be used. As for me, I will be making low budget Efo Riro. This means that even if I do not have much money, my dream of making Efo Riro can still come to pass.
The ingredients needed are Palm oil, Spinach, seasoning, crayfish, locust beans stock fish and cowskin. Don’t be surprised that I didn’t add salt to my ingredients. Maggi or seasoning contains an amount of salt already and adding extra salt will make it too much.

The first three steps in making my Efo Riro is pouring some amount of Palm oil into the pot. Waiting for it to get hot, I add some onions for a better taste of the stew and I pour some locust beans. Not everyone loves locust beans but when it comes to making Efo Riro, adding locust beans is a must because of the great extra taste it gives to the stew.

Havjng done that, I then added my roughly grinded pepper. I didn’t want it to be too watery because this is the best pepper to use for Efo Riro.

How about my proteins? I mean my stock fish and cowskin. Now is the time to add them but I have to wait extra three minutes for my pepper to boil well before adding those. After adding them, I immediately squeezed my seasoning into the stew so it will mix with my proteins to give it a good taste.

This process makes a stew already. To make a palm oil stew, these are the things that needs to be done. Let’s head to making the Efo Riro. It has just one more step. Pouring my spinach leaf into the boiling stew and that’s all.

I love extra things. And I decided to do something extra by adding crayfish. It’s not compulsory but makes it more tasty.

That’s the easy step on making Efo Riro and here is my final result.

Don’t forget, you can have this sumptuous meal with Rice, noodles or any other meal that you like.
