My Battle of the Month - Blasting away the Tofu

Prologue

January has been a month of a lot of ups and downs in my gameplay. I had a brawl where I only one 2 of 7 battles - worst so far. I had a tournament with only 1 win out of 11 battles. Also worst so far. But the worse I play, the more I learn, and I focussed a little on learning how to beat Tofu. I read the article provided by @bravetofu himself (Click here for Bravetofu-Post) where he highlights a few battles using Elias Max Pruitt, and quite a few of those battles are against Tofu.

I also read the article by @beffeater (Click here for the Beffeater-Post) and found a few neat tricks in them. So, here's my favorite battle if January combining both articles using Elias Max Pruitt to Beat Tofu - and, as in my last three posts, Blast is involved. No idea why. But it made the battle even more fun, since I already covered to strategies with Blast, and this battle features a third one.

Article 2 - Embracing the Blast

Bronze-League Modern Tournament. 39 Mana, Amplifiy for all, Blast for all - and Equalizer. Very interesting set-up. I had expected a Tofu looking at battle history and the fact that my opponent (none other than @ghostlybg ) definitely has that card. Got lucky!

Both Tofu as well as blast scream for using Max Pruitt and the Bosun Corsair. The Corsair is affected neither by the blast nor the thorns, has high attack and high armor plus Reach and is the perfect candidate to give Armor Strike and Piercing to.

As a tank, I chose Baakjira - very high health, void protection in case I was wrong and the opponent uses more magic, and slowing down all enemy units giving mine more chance to attack first and avoid enemy attack.

Second, the Corsair, as mentioned.

The Surveyor is not placed randomly - it doesn't get any attack, but if it gets hit by a magic-blast, it will return the favor to the attacking monster. Again, a protection in case I was wrong.

The Merdali Guardian gives heal and gets Weapons Training, 2 magic damage.

Daarg gives weapons training and speeds up the whole team - great combo with Baakjiras slow.

The Explorer gives extra armor to all of the units, which is great for the Corsair, and also Weapons training.

The opponent has a great line-up. Mantaroth as tank is very strong, and a good counter against the melee attack and armor attack by the corsair. The Venator protects the rest of the team with its Reflection shield, and gets a big life boost from Equalizer. The Meriput heals the tank, so does the Spirit Hoarder (if anyone gets hit by blast). Another tank-healer with the Venari, and then the big bad Venka. And, of course, Tofu. Extra health and thorns for everyone!

Round 1

Let's go! The first 11 moves are just the buffs and debuffs. Venka gets the Triage and Scavenger, so the enemy is fully focussed on healing both tank and back-line. Corsair now has 5 melee damage and 8 Armor damage.

In total, my team does 6 magic and 13 melee damage. The opponent 7 melee, 2 magic and 1 range damage. Looking good for me! Plus, the enemy is slowed down quite a bit.

My team gets Manta down to 5 health before he gets healed by the meriput and the Venari. He makes it back to 11 health - so this could take a while to bring him down. Baakjira gets down to 6 health, but doesn't take any damage from the magic attacks - nice!

Round 2

The Guardian heals the whale up to 9 LP - just enough to survive, since the enemy has 8 damage (if noone misses). Mantaroth surives by chance - this time, the Meriput gets to move before my Explorer, if not, it would be done. But okay, let's keep it interesting.

Round 3

Mantaroth survived with 6 LP, Baakjira with 1 LP - but gets healed by the guardian right away, but to only 4 LP. Not enough to surive Venka...

Mantaroth falls! The Armor Strike is enough to bring it down, and Corsair gets and attack on the Venator, doing some blast damage to the Meriput. But Baakjira also falls. Still undecided! I was biting my nails at this point...

Round 4

The surveyor in second works fine now. The Magi-Attacks don't reduce the Armor of Corsair, but the blast-damage is returned to the magic monsters. Nice one.

With 7 and 5 damage, the blast damage on the meriput is 7 - plus he gets his own attack returned to it. The Venator falls before he can be healed, but Meriput surives - this time. Venka does all its damage to the armor, so Corsair's attack-power is reduced now.

Round 5

Still looking good - but Venka with 16 LP alread? That is getting dangerous, and he'll gain quite a bit of health before I can strike him...

The Meriput falls after healing itself. The Corsair's armor goes away, and his health is diminished, as well as the LP of the Surveyor. It's getting close here!

Round 6

The Spirit Hoarder is next to fall, but absorbs two attacks first. Good thing is that the Venari can't attack anymore, since it's in first position. But it still heals itself. Bad thing - Venka now has 18 health and can heal himself while in second position.

Round 7 - 9

The Corsair gets healed by 3 LP, and takes 4 damage each round.

In the 9th round, Venka finally falls. What a battle! All that extra health, the immense healing-power of the opponent - I had so much fun watching this battle. The first time, the second (because it was so cool) and the third time (which was to write this article).

Conclusion

It's hard to beat Tofu, but it's not impossible. Okay, this was bronze level, I can't compete with GhostlyBG in the wild, maybe not even on Silver Level - but still!

Sometimes it's very frustrating to loose against the same card over and over again. First card that I encoutered that way was Quora. Then the Kulu Mastermind. And of course, Agor Longtail. I just couldn't get past them - at first. But then, battle by battle, I learned how to compete against them. And now, they're just some good cards, but not as OP against be as before. I hope the same will happen with Tofu.

Reading on HIVE-Blog helps! Just by going through the two articles mentioned above, I was able to learn a lot and use that knowledge in my own strategy. I won't beat Tofu every time now, but the chances are better.
