The Talents I Never Learned But Now Do Like a Pro

There are some things in life that just come to you naturally, even without anyone teaching you. For me, that’s exactly how it has been with hairstyling, makeup, and tying gele. I never sat under anyone to learn these skills. I never went for any training, yet today, I can confidently say I handle them like someone who went through professional classes.

If someone had told me years ago that I’d be the one styling hair for others, I would have laughed. I wasn’t the girl that played with doll heads or dreamt of being a stylist. But something changed along the way. One day, I decided to try making my own hair because I couldn’t go to the salon. That first trial wasn’t perfect, but it gave me hope. The way I sectioned my hair, the way my hands moved it all felt natural, like I had done it before in another life.

From there, I started trying out different hairstyles on myself, cornrows, twisting, simple braids, packing styles and before I knew it, my sisters and close friends began asking me to do their hair too. The amazing part? I never made mistakes. It was as if my fingers already knew what to do. No YouTube tutorials, no teacher , just raw talent, discovered by chance.

Then came makeup and gele. I remember the first time I tried makeup for a birthday outing. I didn’t have the best products, but I had a picture in my mind of how I wanted to look. I picked up the brush and let my hands do the work. When I looked at the mirror, I was shocked. It wasn’t perfect, but it was beautiful. From there, I continued practicing on myself for events, and slowly, friends started trusting me with their faces.

The gele part is what surprises people the most. Anyone who ties gele knows it’s not easy at all, but somehow, I figured it out on my own. The folds, the layers, the firm grip, the balance , everything just started coming together with ease. Today, I can tie different styles of gele without sweat. I do it confidently for weddings, traditional events, and birthdays.

What makes all these special to me is not just that I can do them, but that I never went to learn them. I became good through constant practice, boldness, and believing in myself. This has taught me something very important in life: not all skills need formal training. Sometimes, talent is just waiting for you to give it a chance.

People around me now call me for hairstyling, makeup, and gele. Some even ask where I trained, and when I tell them I never learned from anyone, they find it hard to believe. But that’s the beauty of raw talent , it shines through when you least expect it.

So if you're reading this and thinking you must learn something the traditional way before you can do it well, think again. Sometimes, all you need is the courage to try and the patience to keep going. Who knows? That talent might just be sleeping in your hands, waiting to be discovered just like mine.
