I laughed at myself: Searching for a Phone while watching it

It's 00:10 AM at my end. and its time to share my midnight muse.

I have come to discover that one of the most humbling things about life is how it sneaks up on you with humor when you least expect it, especially when you are feeling serious, focused, and important. Mine happened during one of those long, quiet nights of postgraduate dissertation research, the kind that convinces you that coffee is a personality trait and sleep is not an option.

It was late at night, and I was wrestling with a few concepts that refused to make sense on paper. You know those ideas that look simple when written but become stubborn the moment you try to apply them? That was my reality. So I did what many students do, turning to YouTube. My phone became my classroom, playing explanatory videos, while my laptop served as the battlefield where I tried to apply what I had just learned.

Then, unexpectedly, the power company decided to be generous. Boom! light came on. If you live where power supply is unpredictable, you understand the excitement. Light at night feels like a small miracle. In my excitement, I remembered my gadget that needed charging. Without thinking too much, I plugged in my laptop and shifted into “responsible human being” mode. That’s when the comedy began.

Almost immediately, I needed to continue the video I had been watching. I reached for my phone charger so I also improve my battery and l, it was gone, or so I thought. I stood up, checked the chair, checked the floor, my pockets, twice. I paused, replaying the last few minutes in my head, trying to recall where I could have possibly misplaced it.

For about three solid minutes, I conducted a rugged, desperate search for a phone that had apparently vanished into thin air. I was confused, mildly irritated, and very convinced that something strange had happened. My movement and murmuring eventually woke my wife. Half-asleep, she asked what I was looking for. With all seriousness, I replied, “My phone. I was just using it now.”

She got up, walked into my study space, looked at me briefly, then calmly pointed at the desk. There it was. My phone was sitting peacefully on the phone holder, exactly where I had left it, playing the video loud and clear.

For a moment, there was silence. Then we both burst into laughter. I mean the kind that releases stress, pride, and exhaustion all at once. I laughed at myself, at the night, at the intensity of research, and at how the human brain sometimes just switches off.

That moment reminded me that no matter how serious our pursuits are, we are still human who can be tired sometimes. We can also be forgetful at other times Just like myself frantically searching for something while staring directly at it. And honestly? Those are the moments that keep us sane.
