In one or another yes.
I've had a fair few projects that I invested in(either time/effort or funds) and had them turn into nothing. Either losing momentum, the person behind it disappearing, or some other thing that ends in everything associated with a project losing so much value.

And much of the time — when these things go to zero — it's not even that the originator(s) had malicious intent... they just reached a point of thinking "this isn't going to work" and walked away, with no regard at all for their stakeholders.

That def happens to. In two cases the orginator of the project just disappeared. In yet another case the whole project was a scam. I was actually sad about that one cause the game they were supposedly building sounded really neat.
So yeah, some were malicious, some were incompetent, and some did their best to repay investors.
