When Motivation Fades: What works
Motivation can be good and also important but it won’t last long without discipline. I don’t know if it’s possible to always feel motivated, sometimes we just keep going because we have to. It’s just important to keep finding enough reason to keep going even when you don’t feel like it.
How do I stay Motivated?
I surround myself with things that’ll pump me up every now and then. I like to work with a vision in mind, so I find a way to write it down, print it and paste it on my wall. So every time I feel like quitting, I can look at my vision and be fired up again. I don’t think it’s possible to stay motivated without having a vision or a goal.
I set long term and short term goals for myself. I work on my short term goals and they’ll eventually take me to my long term goals. These short term goals can be weekly or monthly. So having a target each week, keeps me on my feet and I try to be consistent with it.
It’s easy to set goals and not fulfil them. This is where discipline comes in. When motivation is lacking, discipline fills up. Let’s be honest, it’s not motivation that wakes us everyday to go to work, but discipline.
I rest well, eat proper meals and get enough sleep. If your body is lacking, you can’t even keep up with responsibilities. Gotta stay healthy to be motivated. It takes physical and mental energy to keep pushing. If you’re lacking in this area you’ll burn out and end up slacking.
I’ve had days that I woke feeling not up to it. Looking for any excuse to quit. On such days I don’t freak out, I know it’s perfectly normal to feel that way. And in such days, I let responsibility and discipline carry me through. I endure the season as it comes and just hang in there until I feel inspired again.
Another way I stay motivated is studying/reading on people that inspire me. I look up people who are where I want to be and it charges me up. I do this a lot because it works for me better and faster.
Hanging out with friends that share my vision and challenges me to be better is also one of the ways I stay motivated. We have meaningful conversations, discuss our progress so far and how we can do better. Basically I surround myself with good energy.
It’s important to find what keeps you going and run with it.
Also, as important as motivation is, it’s not all that matters. Motivation is what makes you start, what keeps you going is self discipline and consistency. And with consistency lies power.
You must be able to convince yourself to put in the work. You don’t justify laziness with not feeling motivated. In the end, we’re all masters of ourselves and can force ourselves to do whatever it is we set out mind to.
