Empathy Is Not Quite Dead

And yet, every now and then, something happens that reminds us that “it’s not all lost, empathy still beats in the heart of some.”
Some time ago, I witnessed a moment that left me thinking. I met someone who helped a complete stranger, someone she didn’t know from Adam. The situation looked confusing, even a little suspicious and many people would’ve walked away without a second glance. But she didn’t. She paused, thought about it and then chose to act. You could see her sincerity in the care she showed him. There was no camera anywhere, this was her being herself, she simply helped because it was the right thing to do.
It struck me deeply. Would I have the courage to do the same? So often, even if we want to help, fear holds us back. We worry about danger or being taken advantage of. And sadly, it’s true. Some people exploit the kindness of others. This begs the question, when do we show empathy and when do we walk away?
The answer is not simple. But what I do know is, empathy may not make the headlines but it’s still there. In the hearts of people who still believe in helping one another, one small choice at a time.
So you see, Empathy is not quite dead!
