Empecé a vender café.

I started selling coffee. No, I haven’t bought a café or anything like that. I’m selling brewed coffee at my sister’s house. It’s a common practice in Cuba. Only this time it’s from the comfort of home, not sitting outside with a little table, a thermos, and several cups.
This was an idea that had been circling in my mind for a while, maybe for a couple of years. I had suggested it to my sister for her own benefit, since her house is in a good location and everything gets sold there. However, she always answered bluntly that no, because she didn’t know how to prepare it, and waking up early for that wasn’t convenient for her. Quite the response.
Unfortunately, my sister has neglected her small business a lot, and she’s lost that voracious clientele she once had. Not to mention that many competitors have sprung up in the neighborhood, which has also helped bury her little spot. Still, whenever she gets motivated and brings out something new, sales rise a bit. Then she neglects it again and falls back into the same situation.
It’s a very bad time in Cuban life to live off a salary alone. A bad time to let your business collapse and not fight for it. Yes, because the solution is in her hands, but since she’s not willing to get out of the rut, I’ve decided to take her place and recover everything that was lost.
Now it’s harder, since there’s never electricity, so making coffee under these conditions forces me to use very annoying alternatives. I’m also taking advantage of the guava and cherry trees she has at home, and I’m making juice from each. These are alternatives she hasn’t wanted to use, but I’m moving as much as I can, even going beyond.

I bought some sweets and I’m planning to make other things people buy a lot. Of course, I’m at a loss right now since I haven’t managed to sell all the coffee I make, nor the juice. To turn things around, I tell every neighbor who passes by about the new products we have on offer. People walk by but don’t read our sign, so without hesitation, I “force” them to know what I’ve got.
I also want to improve the sign itself. The one we have is ugly, and it doesn’t fit so many things. I always suggested it to her, but she never listened. The truth is, she’s very stubborn and a bit fearful of taking the next step. I’m going to help her, but by guiding and being the face of the place. Don’t think it’s easy—it’ll also be a test for me, showing how well I can do it, and proving that I’ve really learned from books, podcasts, and the posts you all share in the community.
That said, the customers I’ve had so far have received the fastest, warmest, and best quality service possible. That’s something I always rely on, and something I suggest whenever I have the chance to say it. I’m also aware that all businesses suffer losses at the beginning, but my duty will be to find that break-even point and start earning afterward.
Work also demands from me, and I’ll have to find the time no matter what. It’ll be a problem that I’ll find very pleasant. I started selling coffee, and I’m happy to have taken the first step.

Luego me doy terapia a mi mismo, y sigo adelante.
