I'm fucking old

These last two weeks have been full of musical discoveries for my personal taste. It’s been a long time since I listened to new music. And to a certain extent, it’s not even new music for the world, but rather new for me.

I’m talking, for example, about Red Hot Chili Peppers, of whom I had only listened to their catchiest songs like Californication, Can’t Stop, Dark Necessities, and Under the Bridge. But now I’ve discovered others like Venice Queen and By the Way, thanks to a conversation with a friend who suggested them. I also discovered Spiders and Kill Rock ’n’ Roll from System of a Down.

So, reconnecting with that kind of music I loved so much as a teenager and during my university years—but this time through different lyrics—made me realize that I’m officially no longer a kid. That’s been true for a long time. I think I haven’t listened to new music in at least five years.

And yes, we already know I pay the household bills, I work, I wake up early every day. But that need to do what young people do every day—keeping up with the latest trends in music and fashion—I don’t feel it.

It makes me a little sad because it’s evidence that time has passed, and I have less time left on this earthly plane, or simply before turning to dust. At the same time, I feel relieved not to be a kid today, trapped in all the garbage they have to consume on television, at school, at home, or on the street.

I can use the internet without the danger of becoming addicted, or looking like a puppet doing the moves of the famous “six-seven” (which I also discovered recently).

Today my grandmother turns 89, and yesterday she told me she felt very fortunate to reach that age. I still have 59 years to go before reaching her life expectancy. That leaves me plenty of time in between to keep discovering good music from the past.

I have a feeling that decent music, while not completely dead, will never be like it was in the past. Already now, much of what gets uploaded is created by AI. That makes it soulless.

I do believe that the good music from the past will continue to be consumed even by the new generations, especially rock songs. It hits hard in the brain when you listen to it for the first time. Regarding songs made with AI, I had thought about writing a post about them. It’s a phenomenon that has begun to expand, and at least in Spanish-speaking communities, it seems not to matter whether they have soul or not. Personally, it makes feel so boring; it’s like listening to an instruction manual in slow motion

Red Hot Chili Peppers! Now that is a band I haven't heard in a while. Like you, just don't listen to music much anymore.

They are so good. O think Dark Necessities was their last hit. It is from 2016 I think
