With age, and with the disappointment of most long-running shows, I’ve become a fan of miniseries, especially crime dramas.
I have the background of being a huge fan of the British series Line of Duty, which set the bar very high for me when it comes to police drama. Yes, I know it’s not a miniseries, but it’s one of the few multi-season shows that has left me satisfied to this day.
But the series I’ll talk about today is Criminal Record. I stumbled upon it while browsing around, and when I saw that it combined three conditions I love (British, crime-related, and short), I didn’t think twice before watching it.
Synopsis: An anonymous call to 999 reveals a new lead about a murder that took place in 2011. This new information blows up in the face of a determined investigator committed to justice, and in that of another veteran detective who does everything he can to prove he wasn’t wrong in his verdict.
From the very first episode, both characters make it clear they will go all the way to prove they are right. This is the main hook of the series. Behind all the struggle, there’s a mother fighting for a son who was unjustly convicted, a teenager who lost his mother to a stabbing as a child, and who later endured many other traumas.

The ending has a point I think was unnecessary: the moment when June discovers that Dan had manipulated one last piece of evidence. All this in a context where supposedly there were no more secrets. Later I found out there was a second season, so maybe the writers took advantage of that to continue the story. Honestly, I can’t confirm it, though I’d like to.

Con la edad y con la decepción de la mayoría de series largas, me he vuelto fan de las miniseries, sobre todo las policiacas.
Tengo el antecedente de ser muy fanático a la británica Line of Duty, la cual me dejó el listón muy alto en cuanto drama policíaco se refiere. Sí, ya sé que no es una miniserie, pero es de las pocas series con varias temporadas que me dejó satisfecho hasta la fecha.
Pero la serie de la que hablaré hoy será Criminal Record. Me la encontré hurgando por ahí, y al ver que reunía tres condiciones que me encantan( británica, policíaca, y corta) no lo pensé dos veces para verla.
Sinopsis: Una llamada anónima al 999, desvela una pista nueva sobre un asesinato ocurrido en 2011. Esta nueva información explota en la cara de una investigadora comprometida con hacer justicia, y en la de otro veterano investigador, que hace todo lo que puede por demostrar que no se equivocó en su veredicto.
Desde el primer capítulo ambos personajes dejan bien claro que van a ir hasta el final para demostrar que tienen la razón. Este es el gancho principal de la serie. Detrás de toda la lucha, hay una madre que lucha por un hijo que fue condenado injustamente, un adolescente a la que desde niño le fue arrebatado su madre a puñaladas, y que además luego del suceso vivió muchos otros traumas.

Así se pasan los 8 capítulos de la primera temporada. Se sabe cómo que cada personaje va a proceder, no hay sorpresas ni giros extravagantes. Pero de alguna forma queremos seguir viendo el siguiente capítulo, pues la pasión de la lucha es tal, que hasta te sientes sufriendo con los personajes.
El final tiene un punto que creo estuvo demás, y es el momento en que June descubre que Dan había manipulado una última evidencia. Todo en un contexto en el que se suponía que ya no habría más secretos. Luego me enteré que había una segunda temporada, así que tal vez por ahí los escritores se aprovecharon para darle continuidad a la historia. La verdad no puedo confirmarlo, aunque me gustaría.
