The Last Kingdom — A Powerful Tale of Loyalty and Perseverance// El Último Reino — Una Poderosa Historia de Lealtad y Perseverancia

The Last Kingdom turned out to be one of the best Historical dramas I've watched. With it's heart-thumping action scenes, how it builds conflict, mounts tension, and then resolves it in a satisfying way.

The film is adopted from The Saxon Stories and tells of events that occurred during the attempted conquest of Europe by the Danes or Vikings. The main character, portrayed by Alexander Dreymon, a boy, has his life torn apart after his family is killed by the Danes and himself captured. He's practically raised by the Danes alongside Brida. The Danes who raises Uhtred is Earl Ragnar the Fearless and he raises him as his own son.

When Uhtred attains adulthood, he focuses his mind on trying to regain his ancestral lands which was taken from his family when they were killed. During this quest, he enters the service of Alfred, King of Wessex.

One thing I love about the character of Uhtred is his military brilliance. He's portrayed in the movie as a genius in combat matters. Watching him reminded me of Alexander the Great, Hannibal, Napoleon and others. Alfred, King of Wessex comes to rely on him for the success of his military campaigns. Alfred wins several bloody wars against the Danes mainly because of Uhtred.

Yet, Uhtred gets no reward for his sacrifices to Alfred's kingdom. He's treated almost still like a stranger, almost an outcast. Infact after Alfred's last battle against Danish forces, the King, close to the time of his death, tells Uhtred that despite his exploits in wars, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle won't mention him. Alfred nonetheless makes peace with Uhtred before his passing.

Uhtred's relationships also experience chaos in the movie. His first wife separated from him and went to the nunnery. His first son died. He remarried and had other children who were taken from him by the king. Meanwhile his second wife dies also.

Through these unpalatable situations Uhtred continues to dream or retaking his ancestral home. He sustains his unwavering loyalty to the kingdom of Wessex, now ruled by Alfred's son, Edward the Elder and later, the kingdom of Mercia, ruled by Alfred's Son-in-law, Æthelred of Mercia.

One thing i love about Uhtred, the main character, is his continued loyalty and service to the Kings of Wessex despite his efforts not being properly recognized and rewarded and he himself being treated harshly sometimes, like when his children were taken from him which deptived him of being there for his young children as they matured into adulthood.

I love how he reclaimed his ancestral home at last, fair reward for his loyal services to English kings.

Uhtred later reclaims his lands in the movies end and Edward finally avhieves his father's vision of conquering and uniting England, save Northumberia, through Uhtred's help.

It's a movie that doesn't have one dull moment, from one interesting scene to the other. And there are tons of lessons in the movie, specially about loyalty, grit and perseverance, survival, etc.

If you love a good Historical drama movies, then you could be missing a lot by not checking out The Last Kingdom.

The Last Kingdom resultó ser uno de los mejores dramas históricos que he visto. Con sus escenas de acción que aceleran el corazón, la forma en que construye el conflicto, incrementa la tensión y luego la resuelve de una manera satisfactoria.

La película está adaptada de The Saxon Stories y relata acontecimientos que ocurrieron durante el intento de conquista de Europa por parte de los daneses o vikingos. El personaje principal, interpretado por Alexander Dreymon, siendo aún un niño, ve su vida destrozada después de que su familia es asesinada por los daneses y él mismo es capturado. Prácticamente es criado por los daneses junto a Brida. El danés que cría a Uhtred es el conde Ragnar el Intrépido, y lo cría como a su propio hijo.

Cuando Uhtred alcanza la adultez, centra su mente en intentar recuperar sus tierras ancestrales, las cuales le fueron arrebatadas a su familia cuando fueron asesinados. Durante esta búsqueda, entra al servicio de Alfredo, rey de Wessex.

Una cosa que me encanta del personaje de Uhtred es su brillantez militar. En la película se le presenta como un genio en asuntos de combate. Al verlo me recordó a Alejandro Magno, Aníbal, Napoleón y otros. Alfredo, rey de Wessex, llega a depender de él para el éxito de sus campañas militares. Alfredo gana varias guerras sangrientas contra los daneses principalmente gracias a Uhtred.

Sin embargo, Uhtred no recibe ninguna recompensa por sus sacrificios al reino de Alfredo. Es tratado casi siempre como un extraño, casi como un marginado. De hecho, después de la última batalla de Alfredo contra las fuerzas danesas, el rey, ya cerca de su muerte, le dice a Uhtred que, a pesar de sus hazañas en las guerras, la Crónica anglosajona no lo mencionará. Aun así, Alfredo hace las paces con Uhtred antes de su fallecimiento.

Las relaciones de Uhtred también atraviesan el caos en la película. Su primera esposa se separó de él y fue enviada al convento. Su primer hijo murió. Se volvió a casar y tuvo otros hijos que también le fueron arrebatados por el rey. Mientras tanto, su segunda esposa también muere.

A través de estas situaciones tan desagradables, Uhtred continúa soñando con recuperar su hogar ancestral. Mantiene su lealtad inquebrantable al reino de Wessex, ahora gobernado por el hijo de Alfredo, Eduardo el Viejo, y más tarde al reino de Mercia, gobernado por el yerno de Alfredo, Æthelred de Mercia.

Una cosa que me encanta de Uhtred, el personaje principal, es su lealtad y servicio continuos a los reyes de Wessex, a pesar de que sus esfuerzos no son debidamente reconocidos ni recompensados, y de que él mismo es tratado con dureza en ocasiones, como cuando le arrebatan a sus hijos, privándolo de estar presente mientras crecían y llegaban a la adultez.

Me encanta cómo finalmente recupera su hogar ancestral, una recompensa justa por sus leales servicios a los reyes ingleses.

Uhtred finalmente recupera sus tierras al final de la película y Eduardo logra por fin la visión de su padre de conquistar y unificar Inglaterra, salvo Northumbria, con la ayuda de Uhtred.

Es una película que no tiene ni un solo momento aburrido, pasando de una escena interesante a otra. Además, contiene muchas lecciones, especialmente sobre la lealtad, la determinación y la perseverancia, la supervivencia, entre otras.

Si te gustan las buenas películas de drama histórico, entonces podrías estar perdiéndote mucho si no ves The Last Kingdom.
