¿Tiene la ética una función en el desarrollo de la inteligencia artificial?

Hola amigos en este lunes me siento a reflexionar sobre los temas dispuestos como cada mes en la comunidad Humanitas. Después de un mes de reflexiones profundas sobre nuestro papel en el desarrollo de las humanidades como una forma de entendernos y perdurar, el tema que hoy llega a la mesa es relativamente complejo para mí. Se abre entonces la pregunta, ¿tiene la ética función en el desarrollo de la inteligencia artificial?

Uso la inteligencia artificial en mi día a día de muchas formas, desde la corrección automática de la ortografía, la traducción y la creación de imágenes. Es imposible encontrar una aplicación que no haya tratado de alguna forma de integrar la inteligencia artificial. La inteligencia artificial nació quizás para eso, para ayudarnos de alguna forma a realizar tareas que antes eran muy repetitivas o necesitábamos varias horas para realizar. Hace poco descubrí una herramienta que me permite hacer resúmenes de mis libros de forma estructurada, lo que permite ahorrar mucho tiempo de lectura. De igual forma, hay libros que es mejor leer en su totalidad.

La tecnología avanza muy rápido, a muchos pasos acelerados. Parece que cada herramienta compite en una carrera con la otra, en ver cuál ofrece mejores habilidades y da servicios más rápidos, eficientes y efectivos.

Como toda herramienta, se debe usar con ética y profesionalidad, pero a la vez con buena diversión en el proceso. Miles de desarrolladores están detrás de las IAs, poniendo tiempo y dedicación, y es algo que no tomamos en cuenta la mayoría de las veces. Sin dudas, las IAs son herramientas, pero también el resultado y el reflejo de cientos de años en desarrollo tecnológico. Desde la imprenta a la computadora, esto ha sido un camino largo y complejo, y en él han influido la ética y guía de las personas detrás, tomando decisiones para evitar el daño o el mal uso.

La IA como tal no tiene ética propia, pero es un espejo del reflejo de la ética de nosotros como humanos, más al estar alimentada una y otra vez con datos que nosotros hemos creado. Es esta ética la que guía cómo la IA debe tomar decisiones y actuar, evitando el daño y favoreciendo su uso correcto.

Es nuestra responsabilidad como humanos saber filtrar y manejar la información que las IAs nos ofrecen. Sin una ética detrás, se puede ampliar el desconocimiento y las carencias junto a desigualdades de acceso.

Es imposible que no surja entonces la pregunta, si la IA puede decidir sin intervención humana. Yo, en lo personal, creo que llegará un momento donde habrá que ponerle un límite a lo que puede o no ser o hacer la IA. Hay decisiones que tienen que ser muy humanas y tienen que tener una persona de ética impecable detrás. Esta ética asegurará que las decisiones no perjudicarán a personas vulnerables.

La IA tiene que ser una herramienta transparente y poderosa que acorte las distancias de una forma comprensible para quienes la usan. La IA es y será una herramienta, no un reemplazo para nuestra conciencia y ética humana, y como herramienta, al fin y al cabo, somos nosotros quienes le damos el valor.

Does ethics have a role in the development of artificial intelligence?

Hello friends on this Monday I sit down to reflect on the topics arranged as every month in the Humanitas community. After a month of deep reflections on our role in the development of the humanities as a way to understand ourselves and endure, the topic that comes to the table today is relatively complex for me. It then opens up the question, does ethics have a role in the development of artificial intelligence?

I use artificial intelligence in my day to day life in many ways, from automatic spell checking, translation and image creation. It is impossible to find an application that has not tried in some way to integrate artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence was born perhaps for that, to help us somehow to perform tasks that before were very repetitive or needed several hours to perform. I recently discovered a tool that allows me to summarize my books in a structured way, which saves a lot of reading time. Similarly, there are books that are best read in their entirety.

Technology is advancing very fast, at many accelerated steps. It seems that each tool competes in a race with the other, to see which one offers better skills and provides faster, more efficient and effective services.

Like any tool, it must be used with ethics and professionalism, but at the same time with good fun in the process. Thousands of developers are behind IAs, putting time and dedication, and it is something that we do not take into account most of the time. Without a doubt, AIs are tools, but they are also the result and reflection of hundreds of years of technological development. From the printing press to the computer, this has been a long and complex path, and it has been influenced by the ethics and guidance of the people behind it, making decisions to avoid harm or misuse.

AI as such has no ethics of its own, but is a mirror reflection of the ethics of us as humans, more so as it is fed over and over again with data that we have created. It is these ethics that guide how AI should make decisions and act, avoiding harm and favoring its correct use.

It is our responsibility as humans to know how to filter and manage the information that AIs offer us. Without an ethic behind it, ignorance and lack of knowledge and inequalities of access can be amplified.

It is impossible that the question does not arise then, if AI can decide without human intervention. Personally, I believe that there will come a time when we will have to put a limit to what AI can or cannot be or do. There are decisions that have to be very human and have to have a person with impeccable ethics behind them. These ethics will ensure that decisions will not harm vulnerable people.

AI has to be a transparent and powerful tool that bridges the gap in a way that is understandable to those who use it. AI is and will be a tool, not a replacement for our human conscience and ethics, and as a tool, in the end, we are the ones who give it value.
