Digimon Survive [Let's Play] - 26 - Shuuji's Dark Evolution

Shuuji's weakness gets exploited and tragedy happens. This is one of the biggest events in my playthrough as it paints what happens when the bong between Diginmon and Humans doesn't work out!

Digimon Survive is a Digimon Visual Novel with Turn-based strategy battles. The game follows a group of children who find themselves in another world, and their desperate attempts to find a way back home. The children find themselves involved with monsters, both as partners and enemies.

This is the darkest piece of Digimon media I ever consumed, and Cybersleuth had pretty dark stuff too. Digimon Survive fuses the concept of Digital Monsters with Japanese folklore. It's amazing how the idea of "child sacrifice" integrates seamlessly with Digimon lore. The specific Digimon they choose for this game enhance this theme.

Digimon Survive is the closest modern entry to the old school Digimon anime vibes. Though, more than the earlier Digimon anime series, the game reminds me more of Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor series. In that series too, characters may die depending on your actions.

26 - Shuuji's Dark Evolution

Takuma finds a strange monster, Renamon, but she(?) soon escapes. Haru says that Renamon protected him and his sister.

Next we save our remaining friends, Miu and her partner Syakomon and find Kaito and Minoru who broke out of the illusion on their own. The group is happy as they all found each other for once but they just remembered Shuuji, who's still missing...

Meanwhile Shuuji was enduring an illusion on his own. Arukenimon really exploited his trauma. Even after he met with the others, he kept seeing visions of his father.

She even convinced him to give her own of the kids as a sacrifice, and of course, with his sense of responsibility over the others, he chooses himself.

This all leads Shuuji to lash out on Lopmon, who finally breaks and goes into a dark evolution. This monster not only kills their enemies, but it attacks Shuuji himself next...
