Creative Sunday - Making Yam Pottage Or Asaró
Asaró which is also known as Yam Pottage is a Nigerian meal eaten mostly by the Yoruba and Igbo people. Yam Pottage is the combination of Beans and Yam. It’s a very easy dish to make and a yummy one.
Let’s get to the making of Yam Pottage.
I’ll be making a Sapa (broke) Yam Pottage and I hope you learn from me.
Firstly, since I said Yam Pottage is the combination of Beans and Yam, I’d need to boil my Beans. Boiling the Beans needs you to be very calculative because the Beans shouldn’t be very soft before adding the Yam to the boing Beans.
Then, I waited for more than ten minutes. Normally, it takes time to cook Beans so I waited that long before adding my Yam.
The Yam and Beans do not necessarily have to be very soft without adding other ingredients. Normally, I also have to boil other spicies so that they will get well cooked and taste good as well.
Then, I poured the pepper and added some spicies. I know some people do not add seasoning to Beans but I’m not one of them.
I love to add seasoning to Beans but I always make it minimal so it doesn’t get too sweet that I won’t be able to eat it.
That’s the Yam Pottage but it’s left to add the most important ingredient which will be added in another five minutes. Some people actually prefer to add all the ingredients at once but I love to add it step by step so some ingredients that needs to be cooked for long will get well cooked.
Lastly, I added Palm oil into the boiling yam and beans. It’ has to be a little amount of palm oil but needs to be enough for the quantity of the food as well.
