Hello, friends of fond memories.
Tomorrow would mark one month since the birthday of my Maestro Eduardo Heras León, writer and founder of the “Onelio Jorge Cardoso” Literary Training Center, the only center of its kind in the country. Heras's dream was to promote reading, writing, and the training of writers in Cuba and around the world.
But today I'm not here to talk about the Onelio Center; today I'm here to remember the last birthday I shared with my Maestro, before he sadly passed away.
These photos are from August 5, 2020.
As you all know, we were in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, so that day, the Maestro only received small groups of people, taking all hygienic and sanitary measures and maintaining social distancing.
So I called three of his students, Raúl Aguiar, another of the Center's teachers, and all of us friends and writers. We met at Maestro Heras's house.
His beautiful lifelong wife, Ivonne, welcomed us and led us to a beautiful terrace where Maestro Heras welcomed us. This visit has great meaning for me, and for everyone present, since the Maestro welcomed us, even when it wasn't recommended due to the pandemic. But we were always almost like family, like children to him.
There, we shared cake, sweets, refreshments, and many, many stories. Laughter and laughter were never lacking.
Damián also played the violin for everyone.
Among my treasured photos are these two. In the first, the Master was giving me some advice on a story and recommending what I should read.
In the second one, we were laughing together.
It was the last photo we took, although not the last one in which we saw each other.
He will always be my Maestro; I owe him a lot, both as a person and as a writer. He is, without a doubt, an example to follow and a role model for all of us who call ourselves sons of Onelio, which is almost like saying, sons of Heras.

I'm was truly moved by the way you described that last birthday with your Maestro, filled with closeness, laughter, and learning despite the difficult circumstances of the pandemic.
It’s clear how deeply he influenced your life and the lives of so many others, not only as a writer but also as a human being.
Thank you for sharing such an intimate and valuable memory, reading it is also a way of honoring him and keeping his legacy alive.
That's right, My friend. Is exactly as you say.
Thank you 🫂.

Awnn! Such a great man. We really do have great memories of people who have affected our lives positively. May he rest in peace. One thing that is good is that you have pictures to remind you of him.

These photos are truly worth their weight in gold! Even though people remain etched in our minds and hearts forever, these images inevitably help us remember so many wonderful moments with them. It's one of the best #TBTs of the day, my brother. Thank you so much for sharing it and for helping us make this community of memories even greater 🙏 Hugs!!!
