The National Aquarium of Cuba / El Acuario Nacional de Cuba (eng-esp)

On my last day of vacation, as we will resume our journey to the province of Las Tunas today, we went to the National Aquarium of #Cuba.

I have such memories of this beautiful place from my early childhood. I remember having an uncle who was a diver at the time, and he worked as part of the dive team at this aquarium.

So many years later, I decided to bring my stepchildren and my wife to show them this maritime wonder.

As a zodiac sign, I proudly display my Aquarius status, so this place is like my second home.

The aquarium is located in the municipality of Playa, in an area characterized by embassies and hotels.
Among the most notable embassies is the famous Russian Embassy.

Among the hotels that mark or delimit the landscape of this beautiful aquarium are the Panorama

And the Chateau Miramar.

They're all located on 3rd Avenue.

From right in front of the aquarium, they start announcing who the stars of the show are: the dolphins.

No matter what your favorite marine animal is, dolphins always win hearts due to their intelligence, skills, and the fact that they constantly seem to be smiling.

However, from the moment I walked in, I noticed something was different. The buildings looked the same, and I remembered every street I'd walked down. When I read the sign, I realized what was going on. First, there were fewer species on display, and second, the star exhibits like the dolphins, seals, and sea lions were in storage.
They don't have shows on Thursdays.

There was no show yesterday.

Of all the sea lions, we only saw this one; you can find it waiting to be fed.

It was a blessing, as I was able to show it to my stepchildren, who were delighted with the grace with which I swam and the ease with which I jumped out of the water.

Then we continued our walk around the aquarium's main buildings.

So we arrived at the focarium, but it was closed to the public.

The same thing happened with the dolphinarium. We couldn't even see the dolphins because they were cleaning the pool and it was empty.
They had them stored somewhere else. We'll save that for another time.
I also couldn't take any photos of the inside of the dolphinarium. I owe you those.

Something new at the dolphinarium are these exercise parks.

At first I saw it outside the venue, but obviously the guys like it. And if they like it, then that's fine by me.

They loved it so much that I had to hurry them along to continue the tour. I had to entice them by telling them that in the next fish tank we would see sea turtles and a shark.
Of course, ididn't tell them it was a nurse shark.

These are sharks about 2 meters long but completely harmless to humans.
And I thought the boys were going to be angry, but on the contrary. They were incredibly excited to see a shark so close.

We were able to see the shark, but not the sea turtles. We didn't know where they were.

I assumed they were gone.

We left and headed toward the other fish tanks.

But first, we had to pass by the turtles.

I think the first fish tank was one of the ones that impressed the boys the most. They stood in front of it, moving their heads from side to side, looking at us, and then back at the fish tank, not knowing exactly what they were seeing.

Until finally, they asked me what animal it was.
It was a moray eel.
Or rather, there were three moray eels hiding among the rocks.

What really caught my attention was this beautiful little fish that stared at me while I took the photo.

Of the fish, the shyest was this little pufferfish, or "globito," as the children called it, due to its tiny size.

I was pleased to find this small yellowtail permit. They're a rare fish to see in these waters.

Not as much as barracudas. These beasts are quite common on our coasts.

And, of course, every good Aquarius can't be without a pirate ship anchor.

The morning was coming to an end, so before continuing the tour of the fish tanks, I decided to take them for a walk along the coast.

There's nothing like the smell of the sea. I think only those who have lived near it know what I'm talking about.

This was the anchor of one of the English pirate ships that conquered Havana.

And the photos by the sea are a must.

Almost at the exit, we passed by and found that this time the sea turtles were there.

This family of loggerheads swam peacefully in these filthy waters. So filthy that I could barely tell there were three of them: mother, father, and daughter.

Today's aquarium isn't even half the size it was 15 years ago.
Perhaps I say this because I didn't get to see the dolphin or sea lion shows.
However, it is still a wonderful place and full of incredible energy.
And above all, right by the sea.

Hola, amigos y #viajeros de todo el mundo.
En mi último día de vacaciones ya que hoy reanudaremos el viaje hacia la provincia de Las Tunas, fuimos al Acuario Nacional de #Cuba.

Los recuerdos que tengo de este hermoso lugar de los primeros años de la infancia. Recuerdo tener un tío que en aquel tiempo era buzo, y trabajaba como parte del equipo de buceo de este acuario.
Así que muchos años después, decido traer a mis hijastros y a mi esposa para mostrarles esta maravilla marítima.
Como signo de zodiaco ostento con orgullo el de ser acuario, así que este lugar es como mi segunda casa.

El acuario se encuentra ubicado en el municipio de Playa, en una zona caracterizada por ser habitada por embajadas y hoteles.
Entre las embajadas que más destacan se encuentra la famosa embajada de la federación rusa.

Entre los hoteles que marcan o delimitan el paisaje de este hermoso acuario se encuentran el Panorama

Y el Chateau Miramar.

Todos ellos se encuentran en la misma 3ra Avenida.

Desde el mismo frente del acuario te comienzan a anunciar quiénes son las estrellas del espectáculo o sea: los delfines.

No importa cuál sea tu animal marino preferido siempre los delfines se llevan los corazones debido a su inteligencia, habilidades y a que constantemente parecen estar sonriendo.

Sin embargo desde el primer momento en que entré, noté que había algo diferente. En apariencia los edificios seguían siendo los mismos y recordé cada una de las calles que tanto he transitado.
Al leer el cartel me di cuenta de qué sucedía. Primero, que hay menos especies en exposición y segundo que las estrellas como los delfines, las focas y los lobos marinos estaban guardados.
Los jueves no realizan espectáculos.

El día de ayer no hubo espectáculo.

De todos los lobos marinos solamente pudimos ver a este le puedes encontrar en espera de que lo alimentaran.

Fue una suerte ya que así pude mostrárselo a mis hijastros, quienes se quedaron encantados con la gracia con la que nadaba y con la facilidad con la que saltaba fuera del agua.

Luego continuamos dando un paseo alrededor de los edificios principales del acuario.

Así llegamos al focario, pero se encontraba cerrado al público.

Lo mismo sucedía con el delfinario. Ni siquiera podíamos ver a los delfines ya que estaban limpiando la piscina y la tenían vacía.
Los tenían guardados en otro lado. Quedará para otra ocasión.
Tampoco pude tomar fotos al delfinario por dentro. Esas se las debo.

Algo nuevo en el delfinario son estos parques para hacer ejercicios.

Al principio lo vi fuera del lugar pero evidentemente a los muchachos les gusta. Y si les gusta pues entonces me parece muy bien.

Tanto les gustó que tuve que apurarlos para continuar recorrido. Los tuve que embullar diciéndole que en la próxima pecera veríamos a las tortugas marinas y a un tiburón.
Por supuesto que no les dije que sería un tiburón gata.

Estos son tiburones de alrededor de 2 m de largo pero completamente inofensivos para los humanos.
Y yo qué pensaba que los muchachos se iban a enojar, pero al contrario. Se emocionaron muchísimo al poder ver a un tiburón tan de cerca.

Pudimos ver al tiburón, pero no a las tortugas marinas. No supimos dónde estaban.
Supuse que ya no habían.

Salimos de ahí y nos dirigimos hacia las demás peceras.

Pero antes tuvimos que pasar por donde se encontraban las tortugas.

La primera pecera creo que fue una de las que más les impresionó a los muchachos. Se pararon delante de ellas y movían la cabeza de un lado a otro y nos miraban y volvían a mirar a la pecera sin saber exactamente qué es lo que veían.
Hasta que finalmente me preguntaron qué animal era aquel.
Era una morena.
Mejor dicho, eran 3 morenas escondidas entre las rocas.

A mí el que me llamó mucho la atención fue este precioso pececito que se quedaba mirándome mientras le tomaba la foto.

De los peces el más tímido era este pequeño pez globo o globito, como le llamaron los niños, debido a su diminuto tamaño.

Me gustó encontrar esta pequeña palometa de cola amarilla. Son peces raros de ver en estas aguas.

No tanto como las barracudas. Estas fieras son bastante comunes en nuestras costas.

Y, por supuesto, en todo buen Acuario, no puede faltar un ancla de barco pirata.

Iba concluyendo la mañana así que antes de continuar el recorrido por las peceras decidí llevarlos a dar un paseo por la costa.

No hay nada como el olor a mar. Creo que solo los que han vivido cerca de él, saben de lo que hablo.

Esta fue el ancla de uno de los barcos piratas inglesesque conquistaron La Habana.

Y las fotos frente al mar, no pueden faltar nunca.

Y ya casi en la salida pasamos y nos encontramos que esta vez sí estaban las tortugas marinas.

Esta familia de caguamas nadaba plácidamente en estas aguas sucias. Tan sucias que casi no pude darme cuenta que eran 3: Madre, padre e hija.

El acuario de hoy no es ni la mitad del acuario que era hace 15 años atrás.
Quizás digo esto porque no pude ver el espectáculo de los delfines ni de Los lobos marinos.
No obstante sigue siendo un lugar maravilloso y lleno de una energía increíble.
Y sobre todo, justo al lado del mar.
