Hello, my friends.

Dear @irenenavarroart: I live in Cuba. That should be enough for anyone who knows about my country to know what I'll be talking about from now on.

What I'm about to say might sound utopian to some, or simplistic to others, but if I could create just one law for my country, it would be a law that establishes a real democracy.

One where citizens go to the polls and truly elect those who govern us; from the president to the last council member.

I want to have the right to vote for real political parties, with diverse platforms, with debates, with the possibility of removing someone if they do a bad job.

Perhaps for someone living in a country with that, it's normal, almost boring. Something that's just there and goes unquestioned. But for us, who don't have it, it's something else entirely.

It's a real longing, not something taken from a political book or the press. More than that, it's a need felt every day in the queue to buy bread, in the wait for medicine, in the difficulty of finding something as simple as soap. All of that, in some way, is connected to not having the possibility of saying, "This government isn't working for me, I want a different one."

Not being able to vote for your leaders is like living in a rented house where the landlord never shows up, but you can't leave or negotiate the terms. You adapt and survive. That's the word we use most: survive. In other words, you do what you can with what you have. But you know it's not yours, that you have no say. And that weighs heavily.

I believe that if we had that law tomorrow, just that one, everything would change. Not immediately, of course. Problems aren't solved with the snap of a finger. But it would fundamentally change. Because if you elect your representatives, then you can hold them accountable. You can demand answers. And they know that if they don't deliver, they're gone in four years. That creates a different dynamic. One where power is not an end in itself, but a service that is provided and can be withdrawn.

I'm not asking for anything extraordinary. I'm asking for what is normal in so many places: the power to decide. The power to make our own mistakes, as a people, instead of having others make them for us. That single law would change everything. Because it would change the relationship between citizens and the state. It would transform us from subjects into citizens. And that, believe me, transforms everything.

Hola, amigas mías.

Querida @irenenavarroart: vivo en Cuba. Con eso bastaría para que todo el que conozca de mi país, sepa de qué hablaré de aquí en adelante.
Esto que voy a decir puede sonar a utopía para algunos, o a simpleza para otros, pero si pudiera crear una sola ley para mi país, sería una ley que instaurara una democracia real.
Una de esas donde los ciudadanos vamos a las urnas y elegimos, de verdad, a quienes nos gobiernan; desde el presidente hasta el último concejal.
Quiero tener el derecho de votar con partidos políticos de verdad, con programas distintos, con debates, con la posibilidad de echar a alguien si lo hace mal.

Puede que para alguien que vive en un país con eso sea algo normal, casi aburrido. Algo que está ahí y no se cuestiona. Pero para nosotros, que no lo tenemos, es otra cosa.
Es un anhelo real, no algo sacado de un libro de política o la prensa. Más que eso, es una necesidad que se siente en el día a día en la cola para comprar pan, en la espera por una medicina, en la dificultad para encontrar algo tan sencillo como un jabón. Todo eso, de alguna manera, está conectado con no tener la posibilidad de decir "este gobierno no me sirve, quiero otro".

No poder votar por tus gobernantes es como vivir en una casa alquilada donde el casero nunca aparece, pero tú no puedes irte ni negociar las condiciones. Te adaptas y sobrevives. Esa es la palabra que más utilizamos: sobrevivir. O sea: haces lo que puedes con lo que hay. Pero sabes que no es tuyo, que no decides. Y eso pesa.

Yo creo que si mañana mismo tuviéramos esa ley, esa sola, todo cambiaría. No de inmediato, claro. Los problemas no se arreglan con un chasquido. Pero cambiaría la base. Porque si tú eliges a tus representantes, entonces puedes exigirles. Puedes reclamar. Y ellos saben que si no cumplen, en cuatro años se van. Eso genera una dinámica distinta. Una donde el poder no es un fin en sí mismo, sino un servicio que se presta y se puede retirar.

No pido nada del otro mundo. Pido lo que en tantos lugares es normal. Poder decidir. Poder equivocarnos nosotros, como pueblo, y no que otros se equivoquen por nosotros. Esa ley única cambiaría todo. Porque cambiaría la relación del ciudadano con el Estado. Nos convertiría de súbditos en ciudadanos. Y eso, créanme, lo transforma todo.
