I choose matriarchy / Elijo el matriarcado (eng-esp)

Hello, my friends: Today is International Women's Day: Congratulations!

I think it's important to briefly remember why this day exists. It didn't arise from a commercial whim (like so many other days), nor from the need to give flowers.

The need arose from the workers' struggle, like that of the New York textile factories, where women demanded equal pay and the right to decent work.

It was a movement forged in strikes and tragedies, like the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, where more than a hundred workers died. The need that gave rise to this day was to demand justice, labor rights, and, above all, the right to be treated as equals in a society that had been marginalizing them for centuries.

Until they united, fought, and won.

Today is a day of remembrance and struggle.

That said, and getting to my personal point, I'm increasingly convinced of an idea I read some time ago in a novel by Sheri Stewart Tepper, "The Door to Women's Country."

The novel tells of a world where society lives in small walled cities, where women are in charge. It's a matriarchy. And for me, as a man, that idea makes me think that the world would be a better place, much more sensible and habitable, if we were governed by a Matriarchy.

I say this without any condescension. In my experience, women do everything better than we do. They are more organized, more pragmatic, and, above all, infinitely more efficient. They tend to think about long-term consequences, while we men tend to fall into the trap of immediacy and sterile competition. Their leadership style is usually more collaborative and less... pyramidal.

This isn't an opinion I came up with out of nowhere to make a post on a day like today. Not at all. I've been thinking about it for years, even before reading the novel. There's a reason they've been at the forefront of every struggle throughout history. They've led from the rearguard, from the kitchens, from the schools, and from the battlefields, pushing for real change.

Women have demonstrated a remarkable capacity for resilience. And their construction needs no fanfare. If we look at the administrative and military disasters that men have perpetrated for centuries, it's hard not to think that women would do better. That's why I believe this fight for equality, which we commemorate today, is not only just, but also the hope for a more sane future. They will continue to do it, and in the end, they will win. It's a matter of pure logic.

Hola, amigas mías: Hoy es el Día Internacional de la Mujer: Felicidades.

Creo que es importante recordar brevemente por qué existe este día. No surgió de una ocurrencia comercial (como tantos otros días), ni de la necesidad de regalar flores.
La necesidad surgió de la lucha obrera, como la de las fábricas textiles de Nueva York, donde las mujeres reclamaban igualdad salarial y el derecho a un trabajo digno.
Fue un movimiento forjado en huelgas y en tragedias, como la del incendio en la fábrica Triangle Shirtwaist, donde murieron más de un centenar de trabajadoras. La necesidad que dio lugar a este día fue la de reclamar justicia, derechos laborales y, sobre todo, el derecho a ser tratadas como iguales en una sociedad que las venía marginando por siglos.
Hasta que se unieron, lucharon y ganaron.
Hoy es un día de conmemoración y de lucha.

Dicho esto, y yendo a mi terreno personal, cada vez estoy más convencido de una idea que leí hace tiempo en una novela de Sheri Stewart Tepper, "
La puerta al país de las mujeres.
La novela narra un mundo donde la sociedad vive en pequeñas ciudades amuralladas, donde eran las mujeres las que dirigían todo. Se vivía en matriarcado. Y a mí, como hombre, esa idea me hace pensar que, el mundo sería un lugar mejor, mucho más sensato y habitable, si estuviéramos regidos por un matriarcado.

Lo digo sin ningún tipo de condescendencia. Las mujeres, en mi experiencia, todo lo hacen mejor que nosotros. Son más organizadas, más pragmáticas y, sobre todo, infinitamente más eficientes. Tienden a pensar en las consecuencias a largo plazo, mientras que nosotros, los hombres, solemos caer en la inmediatez y la competencia estéril. Su forma de liderar suele ser más colaborativa y menos piramidal.

No es una opinión sacada de la nada para hacer un post un día como hoy. Nada de eso. Llevo pensándolo desde hace años, incluso antes de leer la novela. Por algo han estado al frente de toda lucha a lo largo de la historia. Han liderado desde la retaguardia, desde las cocinas, desde las escuelas y desde los campos de batalla, empujando cambios reales.

Las mujeres han demostrado una capacidad de resistencia y de construcción que no necesita alardes. Si echamos un vistazo al desastre administrativo y bélico que los hombres hemos perpetrado durante siglos, cuesta no pensar que ellas lo harían mejor. Por eso creo que esta pelea por la igualdad, que hoy conmemoramos, no solo es justa, sino que es la esperanza de un futuro más cuerdo. Ellas seguirán haciéndolo, y al final, ganarán. Es una razón de pura lógica.
