Coffee is pure art / El café es arte puro (eng-esp)

The other day I went to visit Maestro Mario García Portela, one of the most important visual artists in our country, and the mentor of other great Cuban painters.
It so happens that whenever I visit, Maricuqui (as his wife is affectionately known) makes me a cup of coffee with cookies.
But the point is that this coffee is always brought from one of the countries they frequently travel to.
They have always made a living from art and within the art world, so even this seemingly inconsequential act of sharing a cup of coffee is never just that.
The cup of coffee always comes with a story about how it was purchased and where. The coffee from this trip was brought from Vienna, Austria. They say it's the most beautiful city they've ever traveled to, because the entire city is a giant museum.
It's the vision of a visual artist, as you can see. Even the coffee was handmade.
Maricuqui, for her part, told me that the set of cups was a gift from the vendor. He gave them to her because she celebrated his shop.
She says it was a shop that doubled as a café, but designed by someone with exquisite taste.
And finally, the cookies.
Since the first time I went, the coffee always comes with two cookies. That's because her son, once when he was little, told her Mom, that's two cookies per person, and it became a custom.
The incredible thing about this visit is that, in addition to the wonderful company of the Maestro and his wife, the always stimulating conversation full of learning and anecdotes about art at its finest, all while enjoying an exquisite cup of coffee, we also witness the incredible modesty and humility of this great artist.
A person whose paintings are exhibited in galleries around the world and in the homes of several former presidents of various countries.
Without a doubt, coffee, as Maestro Mario says, is an art. From its creation to the moment it's drunk. So, as art, it should be surrounded by good and beautiful things, like a conversation between friends.
And that's what we did: we drank in his art.

Hola, amigos del café alrededor del mundo!
El otro día fui a visitar al Maestro Mario García Portela, uno de los artistas plásticos más importantes de nuestro país; y quien fuera el maestro de otros grandes pintores cubanos.
Sucede que, siempre que voy de visita, Maricuqui, (así se le llama a su esposa de cariño) me prepara una taza de café con galletas.
Pero, la cuestión está en que ese café siempre es traído de alguno de los países por los que ellos viajan con frecuencia.
Ellos siempre han vivido del arte y dentro del mundo del arte, por lo que, hasta este aparentemente intrascendente hecho de compartir una taza de café, nunca es solo eso.
Con la taza de café siempre se acompaña una historia de cómo fue comprado y dónde. El de este viaje fue traído de Viena, Austria. Dicen que es la ciudad más hermosa a la que han viajado, debido a que la ciudad entera es un museo gigante.
Es la visión de un artista plástico, como ven. Hasta el café era artesanal.
Maricuqui, por su parte, me contó que el juego de tazas fue un regalo del vendedor. Se las regaló porque ella le celebró su tienda.
Dice que era una tienda que hacía las veces de cafetería, pero diseñada con alguien con un gusto exquisito.
Y, por último, las galletas.
Desde la primera vez que fui, siempre el café lleva dos galletas. Eso es debido a que su hijo, una vez cuando era pequeño le dijo mamá, son dos galletas por persona, y así se quedó como una costumbre.
Lo increíble de esta visita es que, además de la gratísima compañía del Maestro y su esposa, de la conversación siempre estimulante y llena de aprendizaje y anécdotas sobre el arte, en su máxima expresión y todo mientras disfrutamos de un exquisito café, es ver la increíble modestia y humildad de este gran artista.
Una persona que tiene cuadros expuestos en galerías de todo el mundo y en la casa de unos cuantos ex presidentes de varios países.
Sin duda alguna, el café, tal y como dice el Maestro Mario, es un arte. Desde su confección hasta el momento en que es bebido. Así que, como arte, debe estar rodeado de cosas buenas y hermosas, como una conversación entre amigos.
Y eso fue lo que hicimos: nos bebimos su arte.
