The Fear that comes with being a Girl

Hi, it's Abeegail again, welcome to my blog. Happy New Year, Esteemed Ladies. if there's something that has been stuck with me throughout the years, is the fear of doing something wrong. This is something I have been trying to shake off, especially growing up as a girl child where almost everything you do is wrong.

Growing up as a girl is immense, it's like the entire world is watching waiting for you to do something wrong. No one is ever satisfied with what you do. There's always the constant “Don’t sit like that,” “talk softly,” “don’t be too forward,” “don’t attract attention,” “be respectful,” “don’t answer back.” and before you get to know who you are you are already editing yourself into what society expects you to be.

As a girl child, we have to double-check everything, in fear that we might trigger someone or that something might be off. We check the way we dress, the way we walk, the way we talk, the way we exist, like we are under public scrutiny. Because society prefers a well-behaved girl and once you try to be anything else it's a problem. Boys are allowed to "just be" but for girls it's an entire thing, we are always taught to be careful that it sometimes makes up our entire Identity.

We grow up and we are afraid of being "too much". Too opinionated. Too confident. Too ambitious. Too loud. Too emotional, because society has made us shrink ourselves to the point that we ask how much is "too much", because the society has made us believe that women shouldn't have a voice. And now I think before I speak in fear of saying something wrong, I overthink everything, and second guess everything. It's exhausted to live in fear and be cautious all the time.

What we need to understand is that girls are humans too and they deserve freedom too. Freedom to make mistakes without being condemned, freedom to be imperfect, freedom to breathe without being afraid of stepping on someone's toe. We shouldn't have to work for softness, it isn't something we should earn. It isn't fair that we have to go about life tiptoeing. We shouldn't be conditioned to be afraid of taking up space and to the anxious girlies it's okay to exist without the worry of doing something wrong.

It's still Abeegail✨💗

Still figuring out how to be a girl.

Your words describe what many of us have experienced. Fortunately, this is changing in much of the world. It is our responsibility, as women today, to teach girls to live with that freedom. Good reflection.
