My Life Right Now: Sending my Son to the University

Since my son gained admission into the university I have been stressed out beyond my bearings that at times I just sat on the bare floor thinking about all the stuff I have to take to keep the family going.

Having a child attending a college brings some kind of fulfillment and satisfaction but the cost of financing college studies is not something to joke about, especially this time that the economy is dealing with us financially.

It's not an easy thing to train children in school these days, unlike before when the cost of living was cheaper. Now, a lot of families are mostly living in survival mode, and wouldn't think of giving their kids a higher education if at all they managed to pass through high school. It's getting worse these days, you see teens everywhere playing away their time when they are supposed to be in the classroom or learning skills.

I had a meeting with my two boys today, where we tried to sort out things regarding the eldest school admission. I was telling them how essential being educated is and the sacrifices that come along with it. The journey is not going to be smooth, therefore the boy has to get ready in his mind to face the circumstances. "It is not always possible to get what you want, however, you should not let that bring you down. Money for tuition fees may not be there at the time when you are required to pay it, but that doesn't mean your dad isn't serious about your education. You will lack money and other things, but do not keep your eyes away from the bigger picture." I said, while the two boys bowed their heads.

Telling him about the challenges to expect in the future seems to me as a way to prepare his mental strength, because some youths see going to college as an opportunity to live a larger lifestyle irrespective of how financially buoyant their parents are. Being a person who paid my way through school gave me more experience than others, and I want my boys to be ready to deal with any situation they find themselves in.

The meeting was a success, as I could see the body language of my son. He is more determined now to go to school even if all the things he needs are not provided yet. I got the tuition fees sorted, and paid for the accommodation and transport allowance. What remains are pocket money and a few new clothes he requested for.

I was somewhat comforted by the fact that he wanted to go to school even if he did not have all that he needed. I hope to get him some new clothes and send him some money by the second week of the month.

I am proud that it is my duty that I have to take and do for my son, although I didn't have someone who did the same for me.
