Three Tune Tuesday Chock-full of Ska Music!

Over the years there have been some great ska bands. It has always been a personal favorite genre of mine in addition to hard rock! While many bands were from the UK, the origins of the sound began in Jamaica in the late 1950's and early 1960's. There are some great artists from the era, and one of these Tuesdays I'm going to do a feature exclusively on them, but not this week. I'm going with the ska music I knew growing up as a kid or in my 20's, as I know them the best.
But first, I'm going with the bizarre, which has nothing to do with ska whatsoever. Apparently, this year the UK is producing commemorative coins for The Spice Girls. They rose to stardom in 1996 and honestly had some catchy tunes. It also led to Posh Spice (aka Victoria Beckham) to marry soccer star David Beckham and now she runs a huge multimillion dollar beauty business. Things worked out nicely for her!

Anyway, that is the gold version of the coin and only 96 will be minted. If you want them they aren't inexpensive, $7,259 a piece. Not being a Spice Girls fan I'll pass on this one. But it may become more valuable down the line, how knows? But I just had to share one of the more bizarre coins I have seen in a long time, and since it's music related it had to come on a Tuesday.
Back to ska! But first off, I want to say thank you to @ablaze for starting and continuing to sponsor this fun weekly event where you can share three songs that you enjoy. One lucky participant will win some HSBI units, you can't have too many of those! So if you don't already participate feel free to jump in, just use the tag #ttt or #threetunetuesday and it's never a bad idea to do a shoutout to @ablaze .
Here we go:

The Clash
Formed in London in 1976 this band truly became legendary in their own time. They were together for ten years before disbanding feeling they had done everything they could possibly do as a band. Their sound was a blend of punk, reggae, ska, and funk, making their sound unique. On their third album London Calling they released one of the best ska songs of all time, "Rudie Can't Fail".
They were inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame in 2004, sadly lead singer Joe Strummer has passed away in 2003. I guess posthumous recognition is better than none at all!

The English Beat (aka The Beat, aka The British Beat)
Formed in Birmingham in 1978, this legendary band didn't last very long but changed the sound of ska/reggae music forever. In the UK they were known as The Beat, in the US as The English Beat, and in Australia as The British Beat. Thus all the names... The two main vocalists were Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger. In 1980 they released their first album "I Just Can't Stop It" with one of the best ska songs of all time included, "Mirror in the Bathroom". They produced two more studio albums before disbanding in 1983 but left a lasting mark of the world of music. Although they did reunite in 2006 it was as two different bands, The Beat with Ranking Roger and The English Beat starring Dave Wakeling. The band never really did get back together which was a shame!

Save Ferris
This third wave of ska band was formed near where I live here in Orange County, California in 1995. Fronted by singer Monique Powell they had an unmistakable ska sound. In 1997 they released their debut album "It Means Everything" which featured a cover of one of my favorite songs from the 1980's by Dexys Midnight Runners "Come on Eileen". But it has a unique ska twist which is a lot of fun! While they weren't a huge band they did have some great music. You ought to check them out if you get a chance!

That will wrap up this Three Tune Tuesday, they are always a lot of fun to put together and I hope you enjoyed some ska today. Please feel free to leave any comments or questions below, and as always thank you all so much for all of the support. It really is greatly appreciated! Have a great day everyone!

I think even if I was a Spicegirls fan I'd still pass on that one! Way too expensive! I love Save Ferris. That cover is one of the best out there. It's hard to be the original, but that almost does. I put it right up there with Letters to Cleo cover of I want you to want me.
Way too expensive even if I were a Spice Girls fan too. I just think there are far more deserving musical acts from the UK that should have a coin way before the Spice Girls... Save Ferris vanished fast, but they were a great band just like Letters to Cleo!

STOPOnly 96 minted that’s not very many my friend, but were the price tag of $7259 I will pass as well!😇
It is a beautiful Gold Coin!😊
I'm not a huge Spice Girls fan anyway, so that alone is a pass. But the price makes it a hard pass! lol
Definitely my friend, premiums have gone through the roof recently, along with the spot price!!🙄
What an amazing selection! I've listened to a lot of ska, but I wasn't familiar with this track by The Beat—it's a great song.

The Beat really was a great band, too bad they were so short lived! Mirror in the Bathroom is one of the greatest ska songs of all time in my opinion. Thanks!

Cute spice girls coin haha , not my favourite coin style but it is cool.
Save Ferris is a nice band that completely disappeared by the way I don't remember other songs from it lol
!PIXY
I just find the Spice Girls coin an odd choice. Why not a band that was truly the top band in the world in their era like Duran Duran, Wham, The Rolling Stones, etc? Not my style of coin either, so not one I will be buying! lol

Mana is a little low, so here's a tip instead of a vote! lol
lol what happened? too much votes ? xD
I'm never sure, I think I overdid during responding to posts earlier. Before I had enough caffeine to get the brain working! lol
I do love a bit of ska and that cover is fun.
Here's A nice story. My dad although having a very eclectic taste in music which was ever revolving had never listened to the Skatalites. In the two months before he died we sat on the couch and listened to a lot of music on his banging speakers. He couldn't do much else. He was pretty ill. I introduced him to the Skatalites and he loved it, listening to the album a heap of times. Full on ska was unequivocally not his thing but he appreciated them.
Thanks, it's a fun genre isn't it? I love hearing that story about your father. He appreciated all sorts of music evidently, a shame he was so ill at the end. It's sad that life comes to an end, especially like that. But I'm glad you got to spend a lot of time with him before he passed on!
Yes, we were incredibly, incredibly lucky. He was a long time a'dyin, so we knew when he had onlly a few months and I came back from a trip early and as I had renters in our house, I had to live with them. That turned out to be the best thing ever. He loved having me there and I got to spend a lot of time with him chatting, listening to his beloved music on a banging audio system (he used part of his pay out to buy a hugely expensive set of speakers) and holding space, and was there at the end. Now his spirit lives on in the music I listen to. Though jesus I've had massive sobs when I've found out that musicians he liked have come out with new albums that he'll never listen to!
You’ve had better……

I know ska isn't your cup of joe! I like to mix things up sometimes though!
Nice ska picks today! I saw Save Ferris live in 2025 actually! At a tiny club in New Haven CT an hour drive or so from here. Not my favorite ever but definitely saw them many times in late nineties/early 2000’s often co headlining or opening for bands like Goldfinger or Blink-182 or punk/ska festivals.
I love the English Beat! Mirror in The Bathroom might be my fav ska song ever!
Btw rite back at ya!!!! ⬇️
@thebighigg
How were they in 2025 compared to back in their prime? I never saw them live, but in the 90's I wasn't in the US a whole lot so didn't see many shows at all. That's cool that you got to see all those bands back in the day!
Mirror in the Bathroom is definitely one of the best ska songs ever made!
Honestly pretty good! I gotta admit I haven’t been a huge fan post the early 2000’s. Just not a band I continued to listen to after that period. We grabbed tickets because Ashlee always liked them and it was cheap. They definitely sounded good, her voice is almost exactly same or at least felt like it live.
When I saw them like 5-6 times in 1098-2002 era it was always them on bill with other bands, but I do enjoy them!
Oh Man U ain’t believe who we are seeing in September!!!!!
$7,259 for the gold coin is insane
!HBIT
My friend is a huge fan of Save Ferris
I love listening to Matisyahu, however that's reggae, thanks for sharing fresh ska songs 🎶
Reggae is awesome too, although I'm more familiar with the older bands! Glad you enjoyed!
