Trying Something New

One thing that can never be said about my youngest nephews and niece is that they are afraid to try new things. It's actually a bit maddening how willing they are to go out on a limb to do something that they have never even considered doing before. No really, it's impressive, but also maddening because now @mrsbozz and I have another sports schedule we need to somehow fit into our already packed calendar.
I can't imagine how disconnected we would be from our nieces and nephews if we had actually had kids of our own. It's a full time job. Hats off to all of you!
Anyway, as you can probably gather from the opening imagine, our oldest nephew of the three from this family decided he wanted to wrestle this year. I can't say why. Maybe his friends were doing it, maybe he wanted to stay conditioned for football and baseball. Who knows. The why doesn't really matter, the fact that he is doing it does.

I'll be the first to admit, I know very little about wrestling, but I did attend a Saturday camp a long long time ago when I was in elementary school. @mrsbozz and I were both in a bit of a fog as we headed into the gym not really knowing what to expect from the evening. It was a flurry of activity and even at the middle school level there were a ton of people. We kind of blindly stumbled around until we found a spot to sit between the two mats. Then we waited. And waited. And waited.
It's unfortunate that our nephew is a heavier weight class, because that means we had to sit through all the other wrestlers until it was his turn to go That did give us time to figure things out though.
Unfortunately, his second match was one of the last ones of the night, so while everyone else had shuffled on home, we were still sitting there watching and waiting.
Believe it or not, things usually move pretty fast at a wrestling match. With a proper pin a match can be over in a couple of seconds. Worst case, the wrestlers go the distance and it ends up being five minutes or so.
The first match, our nephew started out strong almost pinning his opponent, but then there was a reversal and he ended up getting pinned. It was over pretty quickly, and I could tell he was disappointed.
Then, in the second match he got his redemption and he ended up pinning the other kid before either wrestler had a chance to score a point. You can see it in the second photo.
I was a moron and I didn't get a photo of the ref holding up my nephews hand in victory. It's actually pretty intense watching the events happen. The ref gets right down on the mat so they can see if the wrestler is pinned. It's crazy.
I think my nephew is enjoying himself and between you and me, I would much rather watch wrestling than soccer... So there's that.
It will be interesting to see if this is just a passing fad for him or if it is something he wants to do moving forward. When he gets to the high school level he might have to make the decision between basketball and wrestling since they are both in the same season, and I am not sure what he is going to decide.
