In Full Swing

Believe it or not, the college basketball season has officially started and we are now in full swing. It's pretty awesome to have hoops back on the TV. At least at this level. I stopped watching the NBA a long time ago after they had the huge officials scandal back in the early 2000's or whenever it was. Add to that the fact that I hardly recognize the NBA game anymore.

It's important to remember that although the season has officially started, we are still quite early into this. In fact, it's only been a little over a week since the games that count have started being played. This early in the season we are going to see a lot of cupcake games. Skewed scores in favor of power conference teams so they can start to get the feel of each other. On the flip side, the money the losing teams get from these match ups usually covers their budget for the remainder of the year.

As a reminder, with the exception of some Big Ten teams, I generally only cover the top 25 nationally ranked teams in these updates. In addition to that, I tend to only highlight upsets. After all, how many 102 to 62 games do you really want to hear about each week. That's right, I'm looking at you number 16 Iowa State vs. Grambling State.

With that being said, let's get to the results from the past week or so.

Last Thursday there were zero upsets in the four top 25 games that were played. Friday on the other hand was a little different. Number 25 North Carolina had a big win over number 19 Kansas 87 to 74. I said it last week, but I don't hate Kansas as much as I used to now that Hunter Dickenson has moved on. It's still fun to watch an upset happen. Especially when it isn't your favorite team on the losing end.

There were nine games on Friday night and the one I mentioned above was the only upset.

Saturday brought us seven games in the top 25 and I am happy to say there was more than one upset in the books. It all got started when number 15 Alabama took down number 5 St. John's 103 to 96, then my number 22 Michigan State Spartans took down number 14 Arkansas in a 69 to 66 thriller. It was such a good game. I just hope the Spartans can grow and get better.

Sunday is for football (at least right now), so there were no college basketball games on. At least not any in the top 25.

Monday we had three games, but none of them were upsets.

Tuesday was a big night. Thirteen games on the schedule with two of them being upsets. First off, number 6 Michigan got quite a scare when Wake Forest took them into overtime but fell just short with the Wolverines winning 85 to 84. Is it possible U of M is over hyped in this preseason? It wouldn't shock me. I'd actually rather be ranked lower and work my way up than be ranked at the top and take the huge tumble.

Number 18 North Carolina took down Radford 89 to 74, and the only reason I mention this game is because my niece attends Radford, so it's pretty cool that they got to play a top 25 team.

Number 12 Louisville upset number 9 Kentucky 96 to 88, and number 14 Illinois knocked number 11 Texas Tech down a peg beating them 81 to 77 for the two upsets of last night.

We have a lot more basketball in the books with a huge match up between number 2 Purdue and number 8 Alabama tomorrow night. Be sure to check back next week for all the updates!
